On May 20, 1929, the Olympic Stadium opened its doors for the first time. 95 years have passed since that first inauguration in which the Barcelona Stadium was presented to the world as a versatile venue, and it did so by hosting a rugby match and a football match on the same day. 60 years later, on September 8, 1989, the second inauguration of the venue would come with the celebration of the V Athletics World Cup, a competition that tested the Stadium's capacity to host the 1992 Olympic Games.
Since that moment, the venue has given us unforgettable moments: international tours by the best rock & pop artists and groups, high-level competitions in different sports disciplines, citizen participation events such as city races or the Super 3 Club Party. Currently the venue for FC Barcelona matches, it was also the venue for RCD Espanyol and the Barcelona Dragons American football team. It is impossible to list all the memories that are part of a stadium that is approaching the celebration of its first centenary.
This year is an Olympic year and as usually happens every 4 years, there are many who want to commemorate Barcelona's Olympic milestone. Some do it to the rhythm of rumba, like Los Manolos and their version of “Friends Forever”, others remembering with nostalgia how that arrow launched by Antonio Rebollo crossed the Stadium causing an “ohhh!” that went around the world, the most athletic ones remembering the record of the 22 medals that Spain won in that edition, especially the gold medal of Fermín Cacho. We will always find El Tricicle's performance on the opening day of the Olympic Games funny and original and we will be moved remembering how Cobi left the Stadium in his silver boat.
Happy 95! Thank you for giving us so many unforgettable moments in the past, and thank you for those who await us in the future.
