On 8 September 1989, the second inauguration of the Olympic Stadium was held. It was on the occasion of the 5th World Athletics Cup.

This was the first event to be held in the stadium once it had been remodelled for the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games. Despite the torrential rains that occurred on that day, the holding of this competition put the stadium and Barcelona's organisational capacity to the test.

The first inauguration of the stadium had taken place 60 years earlier, on 20 May 1989.
