Tulu y Meyer, an eternal embrace
2022-09-27 16:12:23

On 7 August 1992, the Ethiopian athlete Derartu Tulu won the gold medal in the 10000 metres at the Barcelona Olympic Games. South Africa's Elana Meyer won silver. But these two women went down in history for what they did just after confirming their medals. Tulu, who was the first black African to win an Olympic gold medal, waited for Meyer at the finish line to embrace and hold hands and start a lap of the stadium, Tulu with the Ethiopian flag and Meyer with the flag of the South African Olympic Committee. This image went around the world and for decades was the symbol of the fight against racism, the global proclamation of a multiracial Africa.

On Tuesday 27 September, the athletes returned to the stadium for a visit full of memories and emotions. During their visit, they explained that the race together came about spontaneously, that they did not know each other before the race and that, although they did not speak the same language, they were able to transmit what they felt. "It was a timeless moment for both of them, a celebration that crossed borders and colours. An unforgettable moment that is still remembered today".
